Pay by Hour

The fundamental problem in India is talking about work in number of days and not hours. If you look at the Americans, they talk about work only in terms of hours. I have noticed that when we are asked about work estimation or completion timelines of a specific project or task, we quote the time in days and not hours. This includes me as well. It's about time, we make a radical change in the way we look at work.

We need to reason from first principles in solving our fundamental problems. The way we do business and run the economy needs a total change.

Tasks can't be estimated in days or weeks. We need to be laser focused when we estimate our work. There's immense talent and potential in India, but what's lacking is the work ethic. Most people are notorious for showing up late at meetings or appointments, and show little respect for time. Time is the ultimate currency, no matter how much talent we have at our disposal. The rapid rise of GCC investments in India is a sign of our continuing potential and future opportunity. Let's couple our immense talent with great work ethic like the Americans and Japanese.

You never see Americans staying at work after office hours. We need to have a similar attitude and think in hours and even minutes. Moving fast with discipline in the need of hour, for us Indians. If we want to be a superpower by 2047, we need to address the fundamental rules in the way we do work and change our global perception.

Nothing can stop us, if we improve our work ethic and strive towards better work life balance. There are exceptional people with great work ethic in India as well. However, a nation's work culture is defined by and large. The core problem is in the way we do business.

This thinking can only change when businesses start to pay for services per hour. The payment model has to change. The per month salary model is a victorian way of doing work. Our business models and systems need to change fast, if we want to grow fast. Systems can change behaviours systematically.

The pay by hour model instills a sense of focus, seriousness, and urgency in our approach towards work.

So the next time, you delegate work or take up any work, please talk in terms of hours, not days.

Time is the ultimate resource.

Let's amplify our talent and potential with precision time management.

India 2047.
