The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan: A Book Review
Authors: Gary Keller, Jay Papasan
Epigraph: "If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.” — Russian proverb
The One Thing is one of the few books that can have an immediate effect on your life and work. In this noisy world, we're constantly pulled from our purpose due to distractions, a platter-of-options, internet-as-entertainment, doom scrolling, multitasking, constant media manipulation, and people as well as brands turning your inbox into their to-do lists. The list goes on and it's designed to work against you.
Our time is limited, however our potential is unlimited.
The authors give us some fantastic examples of people who have found their One Thing and built a successful life by creating entire ecosystems by focusing on The One Thing and turned it into a recurring theme in everything they pursue in their lives.
This book shares a similar theme with two other books: Essentialism and The Compound Effect. They are are helpful books as well, however The One Thing is laser focused.
I think this is the most important takeaway from the book to get started, right away! Here's an interesting perspective from the Authors. "If you don't know The One Thing, then The One Thing is to find The One Thing. I think it's a great way to begin introspecting your work and life. Keep searching, exploring, and you'll find purpose in life. Once you have absolute clarity, build a vision for your life, nothing can stop you. You'll figure it out. Do everything in your control to focus on that one thing.
The One Thing doesn't need to be just one thing per se. You can find The One Thing in various important aspects of your life, like health, love, family, relationships, career, wealth, societal impact, etc. The progress you make in these areas of your life are bound to add up, create a domino effect as well as a compounding effect, and accelerate your holistic success. You can move mountains, however you need to start moving stones, now!
Throughout the book, you'll find highly engaging illustrations. By reading this book, you can turn your to-do lists into success lists, learn about the extreme pareto principle, and many other easy-to-understand and quick-to-implement concepts. These are simple, yet powerful ideas that you can execute right away, not some fine day.
This is one of my favourite books and I would recommend this to anyone who is ambitious and passionate about life. This also helps people who are confused in terms of choosing and chasing a specific direction. There are many books that will help you on your path, however this one will help you find that path and force a keen sense of direction, in the first place. This will help you cut through noise, see things clearly, evaluate your options, take better decisions, choose right things, and find purpose in your life.
Now The One Thing is to read The One Thing.
Wishing you all the success in life.
My Rating: 4/5
